19/01/20 the death of Zephyrine closes one of the first chapters of Stauffenberg Breeding and Racing
ZEPHYRINE (1994, by Highest Honor - Petal Girl) had to be put down today at
SCHLOSSGUT ITLINGEN due to infirmities of age. With her is the last of the fillies gone, which were purchased as yearlings by Marion and Philipp as foundation of their breeding and racing activities back in 1995.
ZEPHYRINE was bought at the Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sales, which were the best yearling sales in Europe at that time for only GNS38.000. She was the first foal out of
PETAL GIRL, a sister to
MTOTO, the Champion older horse in Europe in 1987. The following year
PETAL GIRL foaled the Gr.1 winner
MUTAMAM.
However
ZEPHYRINE was sent to trainer Harro Remmert, but had to be retired unraced due to a sesamoid fracture. She produced 9 winners from her 12 foals including two classic winners -
ZENATO, winner of the Svensk Derby and Champion 3yo in Scandinavia, as well as
ZEGNA, winner of the Norsk Oaks, who is continuing her legacy at
SCHLOSSGUT ITLINGEN. and has produced an other classic winner with
ZAHARA, her first foal winning the Norsk Oaks as well.
ZEPHYRINE had enjoyed her retirement since 2014 and will always be remembered for her quite quirky character, but especially producing the first Derbywinner for Marion and Philipp
